Architecture of Learning

Architecture of Learning

Architecture of Learning™, an instructional design model based on neurocognitive and educational research findings, empowers teachers/trainers to effectively convey their message in a way that leaves a lasting impression. Because current brain and learning research informed this model's creation, any instruction designed using this model enables natural learning.

Instructional design grids, or “blueprints,” align methods, material, and student thinking to produce learning. The type of material to be taught—skill, content, or a combination—dictates the type of blueprint selected, customizing the teaching-learning process. The blueprint guides the selection and sequence of learning activities that compose an instructional unit. Browse through a few sample blueprints in the sidebar to experience the teaching/learning process.

Architecture of Learning™ Training

While based on the most current research from a variety of scientific fields, Architecture of Learning™ Training is accessible and practical for organizations sincerely interested in fostering lasting learning. Intentional instruction does not just happen. It takes time and hard work, but the dividends last for a lifetime.

Architecture of Learning™ Training is a three-day professional development event that explores:

  • the neurocognitive process of constructing understanding
  • the concept of cognitive blending and its relationship to learning
  • the relationships between comprehension, elaboration, pattern recognition, application, and recall
  • the various types of content and the learning processes associated with each
  • instructional design using Architecture of Learning™ Blueprints
  • the development of assessments based on the process of teaching, which is based on the process of learning, creating instructional coherence and validity

Architecture of Learning™ Training is practical for classroom teachers, trainers, and curriculum developers. Participants experience the model, developing a unit ready for implementation Monday morning. It is highly recommended that administrative decision makers attend the training to experience the model and carry the vision to support its implementation.

    Testimonials

“It was an inspiring opportunity for me to participate in Architecture of Learning training last spring. The Architecture of Learning blueprint for curriculum planning captures a design process teachers can use if they care about educating for skills, knowledge and wisdom. The blueprint structures the process so that every stage of learning is carefully considered, while remaining open to the creative possibilities needed for a wide variety of learning contexts.

It encourages teachers to escape the confines of the textbook and scripted lesson plan by providing the scaffolding of a planning process that is easy to adapt and grounded in sound educational theory. The elaboration phase is especially unique in its ability to establish a pattern in learners for future application and learning. I highly recommend this training to all beginning and experienced teachers, as well as teacher educators.”

“Architecture of Learning has provided a model for the logical progression of effective, purposeful instruction for our teachers. Many teachers on staff have remarked about the sensible layout of the blueprint, the systematic and cohesive process of thought through which they work to construct a blueprint, and the success they've experienced as they execute each strand with their students.

A number of teachers have exclaimed that it's actually enjoyable and stimulating for them to plan their teaching with the blueprint model. They've expressed that students benefit from the intentional creation of a reference point in the Experience Strand to which they refer often throughout instruction, and the incorporation of Elaboration that is embedded within each strand.”

“Our fourth grade teachers have been working with their students on the associative and communicative properties (new definitionally for the children) in math. They have used the Architecture of Learning blueprint beginning with the experience strand and are now into comprehension. The teachers are amazed at how the children understand the concept because of the activities in the experience strand. They are able to relate the concept to their own experiences, form a pattern statement, and explore where else the properties can be found.”
